It has been more than 4 decades since the term nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was coined, with the disease moving from a clinical and pathologic description to one that has a set of diagnostic criteria, albeit one of exclusion. The NAFLD definition includes: (1) evidence of hepatic steatosis, (2) absence of secondary causes (a long list) of hepatic fat accumulation, and (3) no coexisting causes of chronic liver disease.1
